At least 13 individuals killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
